Are you still feeling that the fluorescent fixtures are still the best over the LED solutions? I see that Lowell has a unit that actually allows some color temperature adjustment. I just hate carrying glass. Also, the china balls are okay but send light everywhere and then it bounces around sometimes compromising the setup. I wish they had a half opaque (black) ball--maybe I'll invent one and get rich like you.
Hi Dennis,
We'll start by clarifying one point. I am NOT rich. Not by any stretch of the imagination.
Ok, Now that you know I'm in the same boat as everybody else (I just invest in stuff when i do projects), I can give you my broad view on lights...
I love LEDs for their portability and flexibility but they don't create a hard light source (except for VERY expensive fixtures). That's what hot lights are really for.
I like Flos, but the glass is a pain to travel with.
China balls can be controlled (the JEM Ball has just what you speak of so you can "flag" the light with velcro based black fabric).
Big subject, but different lights for different jobs.

Hello Jem,
I was wondering if lighting a green screen could be done with china balls? Thanks in advance.

Justin,
It could be done because they produce such an even light, but China Balls throw light everywhere and that would be problematic for the lighting used on the talent. It would be going everywhere and would have to be flagged all over the place.
I would stick to other lights for green screen.
