A couple of comments on PRG stuff...

1) When I'm saying that the output is supposedly 125 watts on the Foton light, I mean that it definitely seems to be pumping out more light than that. Seems more like 1501-75 to me but I may be worng.

2) The HS only draws about 400 watts and has close to 4K of output. That's crazy talk!

Do I sound excited about this light? I am! Not something we're all going to go out and purchase, but I could see this as a popular rental for a lot of stuff.

Ok, now I'm really confused which lighting technology to next invest in! This is pretty amazing stuff. With 4K of light you could easily shoot an interview outdoors and use the sun as your backlight, right?

Cine Able is listing this thing for $3740

That's quite a deal for 4K of light. An ARRI 4K PAR costs like $6000.

I'm doing a 2 month-long shoot in the fall where I will be driving all over the U.S., filming interviews. I need to bring everything with me and I'm trying to keep the amount of gear to a minimum. I'll be shooting on the C300 and 5D.

I don't want to drag around my ARRI 4 light kit (300/650/650/1K) as it's overkill for travel, weighs 90 pounds, and takes up half the back of my Subaru. Plus, they are hot lights and tungsten only.

Perhaps I could get away with one of these PRGs and something else smaller for a backlight. I can use a reflector for side/fill light.

This light will have a separate ballast but is still small and lightweight. With a couple of reflectors, a PRG Foton and maybe a Dedolight or two, you could do a lot.

Neato. I just wish they were affordable to own.

I'm sorry i missed it when I was down there. How big and what's the weight of the ballast? do they have some sort of speedring for a small or medium Chimera? or would you just bounce it?

how about the safety factor, what kind of spectrum is it throwing out? does it filter the uv? or any other concerns we should be looking at? i'm not familiar with Foton as a source at all.

speaking of spectrum, how does it look? does it spike like leds? or is it pretty full and even

do you see this as a HMI replacement?

sorry for all the questions but this is a pretty interesting light at 400 watts for 4k brightness.

thanks for the post

I own this light. I bought it on specs alone. It showed up to set without me ever testing it, curious to see if my DP who is ASC would like it. By the next set up we were keying with it. It literally motivated a window source as soft key, the spread was enough to shape the room by flagging. The particular softness of this light was such that we put nothing on it - a soft & bare source on a mature female subject. If this weren't enough, the spectral density on the graphs were exceptional, even the raw files glowed in a new way under artificial blue light. Like a Diva 400, minus the plastic, and about 3.5 times the output and wider spread. A lot like a 1.2 ltm with an xs chimera with a full rag and diaper. In a flat reading 24fc from 20' in 3200k. 20fc in 5600k. This means about 20fc in an approx 40' Semisphere. Perfect for smaller hd video formats. Spread reminds me of a 2k space light. Intensity and quality is about 3 1k nooks pushing through a 2x3 gel frame diffed with 129. It is its own quality of light and a potential game changer. Major con is that it has a ballast, which has a big footprint. A stand clamp mount would be good. I can also see the powercon not working for location work, it will be a problem, designed in a way that when you pick up the ballast the powercon scrapes/hits the ground everytime. It would be better if all cables came out of one side and was reshaped into a long block rather than a big laptop that can't stand on its side.
