Roma Wrap

An absolutely crazy shooting schedule. Great fun but insane days that were 16-18 hours door to door. I had everyt intention of shooting daily gearbox episodes but the body disagreed and we couldn't fit them into the shooting schedule.

This episode was shot once it was dark and when we shot the interviews nobody spoke directly to camera so the lighting was a bit different. We also were shooting with two cameras so one (A) was a bit wider and the other (B) was in very tight.

The FS700 held up well but is a bit quirky. High speed is great. I'll talk more about it in future episodes.

I do feel that bothe the FS700 and C300 have their place and if high speed isn't a requirement (which it was for this project), then the C100 is probably a camera worth considering.

Oh, and BTW... The 5DMKIII held up very well. It has it's own look but it's low light performance is stellar. Seems to me that there is less noise than the FS700 at 5000 ISO. Sure, a bit softer, maybe a lot softer. But, I like the image it produces (I just wish it has a couple extra stops of latitude in the there for highlights).

The C100's specs look good although I'm wondering about the consumer level codec and unusable viewfinder. A 0.24" EVF - you've got to be kidding. My Canon HF G10 has the same useless viewfinder and the C100 costs 8x as much.... and no I wouldn't just simply bolt my Zacuto EVF onto the C100.

Would someday like to know your thoughts on the new Sony range - A99 and VG900. Moire and aliasing hell?

What was up with all the camera drift in today's episode -- fatigue or creative choice?

Either way, interesting as always.

The former, not the latter. Unless you loved it and thought it was pure awesomeness. Then the latter! ;-)

You briefly mentioned the Torch Bolt lighting set up worked well. Since I normally work "one man band", I've been looking for a small lighting package for simple 1-2 person interviews. Would you recommend this as a good solution? Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Good to have you back, I missed your insights last week. But it's good to know that you are human. I was beginning to wonder with your busy schedule and still being able to post.

John,

It's definitely a good solution for small productions but not the least expensive. I like that if I have 3 lights I have options to use them in different ways. 1, 2 or 3 at a time.

man, but the Toch LED Bolt is crazy expensive? is it really worth it? I can buy like a used mole with that money. I need a run and gun on camera light though.

Victor,

i think you said it all already. Mole is a very different light. If you want portability and output in a run and gun light the BOLT is one of the best options right now. You have to decide if $300 is worth it based on what the light can do.

so is this the best output a gun and run can do? I heard of other LED options like z96 and Neewer have other options like 126 or 160 for less than $50. Just wondering if you have use both and can give comparison.

Very different lights. BOLT has a very long throw. Great for lighting stuff. Narrative. Expensive but more versatile than the small LED versions. Not saying you should get it, just saying it's different.
